Yvonne Liu, Senior Research Associate, is a graduate of Columbia
University (B.A., Anthropology, 2004) and pursued doctoral studies in
sociology at The Graduate Center, City University of New York from
which she received an en-route M.A. in 2007. Her academic focus was on
the neoliberal turn of the Chinese economy since the 1970s and the mass
migration of rural residents to cities in search of work.
She has four years of experience in policy analysis and applied
sociological research in the areas of healthcare, education, and urban
planning. Yvonne worked for 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East
as a researcher in New York City, where she tracked state healthcare
reform and conducted comprehensive research on major healthcare
systems. She has a background in education technology and new media,
an industry she was employed in for eight years while working towards
her undergraduate degree.
Yvonne became politically active in
school, organizing youth and students
against the war and as a contingent in global justice mobilizations. She has been active in various groups and coalitions in NYC, including
the Coalition for the Human Rights of Immigrants, Organizing for
Popular Power, and the Direct Action Network. She's also worked with
national organizations such as United for Peace and Justice and the War
Resisters League. In 2004, she helped to
co-found and lead NYC Summer, a project of the Paulo Freire Institute,
which trained youth activists of color. She also served as a board
member on the Local Station Board of WBAI 99.5 FM, a Pacifica affiliate.
Yvonne and her partner moved to the Bay
Area from New York City, where she was born and bred, in the summer of
2008. Her family resides in Shanghai and Suzhou, China.
