Yvonne Liu, Senior Research Associate, is a graduate of Columbia University (B.A., Anthropology, 2004) and pursued doctoral studies in sociology at The Graduate Center, City University of New York from which she received an en-route M.A. in 2007. Her academic focus was on the neoliberal turn of the Chinese economy since the 1970s and the mass migration of rural residents to cities in search of work.

She has four years of experience in policy analysis and applied sociological research in the areas of healthcare, education, and urban planning. Yvonne worked for 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East as a researcher in New York City, where she tracked state healthcare reform and conducted comprehensive research on major healthcare systems. She has a background in education technology and new media, an industry she was employed in for eight years while working towards her undergraduate degree.

Yvonne became politically active in school, organizing youth and students against the war and as a contingent in global justice mobilizations. She has been active in various groups and coalitions in NYC, including the Coalition for the Human Rights of Immigrants, Organizing for Popular Power, and the Direct Action Network.  She's also worked with national organizations such as United for Peace and Justice and the War Resisters League.  In 2004, she helped to co-found and lead NYC Summer, a project of the Paulo Freire Institute, which trained youth activists of color.  She also served as a board member on the Local Station Board of WBAI 99.5 FM, a Pacifica affiliate.

Yvonne and her partner moved to the Bay Area from New York City, where she was born and bred, in the summer of 2008. Her family resides in Shanghai and Suzhou, China.
