Akiba Solomon is the newly appointed managing editor of Colorlines.com. As a freelance columnist and reporting fellow, she covered the intersection between race and gender for the online, daily news magazine.
Prior to joining Colorlines.com, Solomon served as senior editor for the print version of Vibe Vixen, a health editor for Essence, and a political editor for The Source when the "hip-hop bible" was an ASME-nominated title.
In 2010, she was the recipient of a National Association of Black Journalists award for "Mapping AIDS in Africa," which ran in Heart & Soul. Solomon's work has also appeared in Glamour, The Daily Beast, Ebony.com, Dissent, Redbook and POZ, among other outlets.
Along with Ayana D. Byrd, Solomon co-edited the body image anthology "Naked: Black Women Bare All About Their Skin, Hair, Hips, Lips, and Other Parts" (Avery/Penguin, 2005).
