The Applied Research Center (ARC) is a racial justice think tank and home for media and activism. ARC is built on rigorous research and creative use of new technology. Our goal is to popularize racial justice solutions and prepare people to fight for them. Our current programs include Strategic Research, Multi Media, and the Racial Justice Leadership Action Network.
Position Summary:
ARC is seeking a highly detail oriented and self-motivated person to organize a public education campaign about the use of the phrase “illegal alien.” Tammy Johnson, the Director of Strategic Partnerships, will supervise. The position requires frequent travel and is based in either New York, NY or Oakland, CA. This is a 9-12 month position, depending on the duration of the campaign.
Responsibilities
1. Work with the cross-departmental campaign team to develop a plan and the tactics for a consistent and concerted online mobilization, outreach, fundraising and membership development
2. Oversee and implement grassroots organizing activities, primarily through the internet by using new technologies
3. Develop and distribute high-quality campaign tools on schedule to targeted audiences
4. Develop an email strategy and lead implementation of email campaigns
5. Create and manage online and offline activities
6. Write and edit emails and web content, including calls to action and fundraising appeals
7. Build and maintain campaign lists
8. Develop and coordinate the engagement of allies
9. Represent the organization in professional and media settings
Qualifications
• A track record of highly creative and innovative social justice campaign experience including but not limited to direct action, issue-based, electoral and media based efforts. 2-3 years of such experience is ideal
• Able to travel extensively within the U.S
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills
• Familiarity with racial justice theory, history and current conditions affecting diverse communities, including Black, Asian, Latino, American Indian and Middle Eastern communities, both U.S. born and immigrant
• Strong familiarity with immigrant issues and immigrant rights movements
• Experience with working with new media, including video and Web 2.0 tools
• High degree of professionalism and personal integrity
• Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
• Functional understanding of Internet technology and communication. Experience with blogs, social networking sites, and email list communications
• Solid project management experience
• Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced, demanding, and unstructured environment
• An excellent sense of humor
Bilingual capacity in English plus another language common to today’s immigrants (i.e. Spanish, Bengali, Arabic, French) is highly beneficial.
Must have valid Driver's License
Must expect to work extended hours including some evenings and weekends
