Business Intern
(New York) The Applied Research Center is seeking a part-time Winter/Spring 2010 Business Intern. The Applied Research Center (ARC) is a home for media and activism on racial justice, built with rigorous research and interactive technology. ARC uses original journalism, multi-media, and creative story-telling to focus on structural solutions that advance racial justice for communities of color. ARC’s work is concentrated in three program areas: Strategic Research, Leadership Action Network and Strategic Partnerships, and Media, which also publishes ColorLines, the national newsmagazine on race and politics.ARC is preparing to launch new products, including a new online platform and hub for racial justice news, commentary and activism. We are seeking a Business intern to join a dynamic team of researchers, activists and journalists, and assist with product research and development. RESPONSIBILITIES: This Business Internship will be based in Manhattan, New York. The intern will report to and work closely with our Executive Director, Rinku Sen. Intern duties will include: comprehensive product and pricing research, assistance with prototype testing, focus groups and surveys, evaluation of new product lines, and research and writing of business plans. Intern will be expected to conduct competitive market and industry trends analyses, study feasibility of products, research target demographics and growth avenues. Additional duties might include marketing, promotion and recruitment for our biennial Facing Race Conference in Chicago from Sept 23rd-25th, 2010. The candidate should have the following basic qualifications: strong research and writing skills, familiarity with popular media (video, social networking, blogging, etc.), ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds a must, basic knowledge of various on-line and print research tools, flexibility and creativity. Prior experience with marketing and business research is required. Multi-lingual skills are a plus. This is an unpaid internship that offers monthly commuter benefits. We will work with students to facilitate school credit. Interns will have the opportunity to be published on the RaceWire blog.
