Green Equity Toolkit: Advancing Race, Gender and Economic Equity in the Green Economy

We have to stay fired up to push our government to do its job... namely, putting millions of people into good jobs and answering the urgent needs of our communities. ARC has just published two *new* Green Case Studies that profile successful campaigns to improve our communities while helping the planet.

These case studies build on “The Green Equity Toolkit: Standards and Strategies for Advancing Race, Gender and Economic Equity in the Green Economy” that highlights green equity success stories and practical steps for how labor and community organizers can advocate for equity and inclusion in the green economy.

“Filling the Gaps: COMMUTE and the Fight for Transit Equity in New York City” tells the story of communities of color mobilizing to win improved transportation access in New York. "Translating Green Into Navajo: Alternatives to Coal Mining and The Campaign for a Navajo Green Economy" profiles the Black Mesa Water Coalition and its work to spearhead the formation of the Navajo Green Economy Coalition.

The first case study, “Greening Los Angeles: A Model Case Study of Green Retrofits of City Buildings” centered on SCOPE (Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education), which won passage of a green retrofit ordinance for municipal buildings that will create high quality jobs for communities of color.

The case studies provide lessons that can be used in other communities, including the need to define green jobs at the community level, ensure broad-based democratic participation in the political and economic planning process and develop inside-outside strategies to mobilize both the community and policymakers.

The Green Equity Toolkit, developed by the Applied Research Center in conjunction with several organizational allies, includes Principles, Goals, Outcomes, Strategies, Success Indicators and Examples for making race, gender and economic equity a priority in green-collar job creation.

The production of this toolkit and the execution of related activities were made possible by generous funding from the Surdna Foundation, the Mitchell Kapor Foundation and the Penney Family Fund.
